The System and Water Supply

The key feature of the system is the bushfire specific HD 10 sprinklers, which are exceptional with their multi directional heavy droplet deluging. This is exactly what you do need with the strong winds that accompany bushfires. The sprinklers sheet a heavy droplet curtain of water down from the eaves onto the walls and external surfaces where embers accumulate putting them out. Plus they spray under your eaves and back onto the roof as well to deluge your gutters. The majority of homes that are destroyed by bushfire, ignite as a result of air blown embers. None of the alternate Butterfly or Impact sprinklers can provide the coverage, water efficiency or adjustability that these do.

Incorporating a full copper system utilizing high volume piping that surprisingly looks good, flowing with the lines (eaves & gables) of your house if externally attached, or piping can be concealed, particularly during the building phase of your home. The HD10 sprinklers with high volume pipes coupled with the use of a powerful high flow electric start diesel pump offers the best means of providing the required flow of water to fully deluge where it is needed.

It is essential to have at least 20-25,000 litres of available water to run your system continuously for well over an hour, being for a 20-30 sprinkler average house system. Concrete or metal tanks are recommended as they will withstand the radiant heat unlike plastic tanks. Tanks can be provided. It is not recommended to run the system on town water supplies as pressure is often lost during high usage times, particularly during a bushfire when fire trucks are accessing town water supplies and everyone is using water.

Automatic Activation

The Bushfire Pro system also offers a fully computerized Automatic Activation, which is a fantastic system for those people who may be away from their dwellings. This system operates with smoke sensors that will activate the system at a set level of smoke but only for a set amount of time. This will then repeat if the smoke level maintains or intensifies. If the temperature then rises to another set level the system will automatically come on and stay on until either manually shut down or until it automatically stops due to either lack of water or fuel.

Fire Suppressant injection

Fire suppressant injection is also another feature which when added at the output of the pump increases the efficiency of the water significantly. These Dosatron fire suppressant injectors are the most efficient injector pumps available, now being used by the CFA in Victoria & South Australia on their fire trucks. The Blazetamer Fire retardant used is the only approved Polymer that is environmentally friendly and safe to use.

Maintaining the system

It is very important to carry out a periodic maintenance schedule by running the system at the beginning of the season and then again at the end to make sure everything is kept in good running order and working properly. Sprinkler jets can become blocked by wasps etc, sprinkler can be easily removed and cleaned. The sprinklers have a built in filter to prevent internal blockage from sediment within your water supply e.g., pumping from a dam or creek etc.

Generally sprinklers affected by wasp nests will self clear by just running the system for a short time. When the system is installed a reticulation link is also included so that the pump can be run without having to run the sprinklers. This allows for regular pump activation without drenching your home every time you want to check that the pump is operating properly.

Sapphire Coast Bushfire sprinkler Systems offer an ongoing periodic maintenance service for people who would rather have their system maintained professionally.

Summary

These systems are the most functional, well designed, neat looking bushfire protection system you can get. An asset to anyone’s home and likely to become a standard requirement for buildings built in certain fire prone areas into the very near future. Australian Standards are soon to be developed for Bushfire sprinkler systems. This system is considered the benchmark by many of the regulatory authorities and will be a guiding system in the formation of the standard.

Warranty

FPA AustraliaAll systems offer a full 3 year warranty on all components including installation except for the pumps which come with the standard manufactures warranty which is generally 2years or 12 months depending on the make of the Pumps. All workmanship is carried out to very high standard and complies with FPA code compliance standard.
